‘We just want a little bit more’ – Liverpool should be scoring more goals says Taylor

Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor says that his side should be scoring more goals and that they are demanding more of themselves.

The Reds have scored 12 goals in seven league matches. It is a decent return, however, Liverpool have played some good attacking football and have dominated the ball in many of their games.

When speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at West Ham United, Liverpool boss Taylor said that the club want to make a little bit more of their entries into the final third.

“I’ve been impressed more recently that even with a few frustrating results, we are moving in the right direction with our dominance of play,” Taylor said. “We have got to make more of our final third entries because we’ve had a lot. We had double the final third entries against London City, so we just want a little bit more.

“Scoring two goals at home in St. Helens is fine and our goalscoring output has improved this season, but that was obvious that it was going to improve with the amount of ball we have. We just need to turn it up a notch.

“It’s difficult because our attacking options at the top end of the pitch are limited with the injuries.”

Commenting on final third actions in detail, Taylor highlighted what Liverpool need to do to improve the ‘goals for’ column.

He said “It’s about many things. It’s about individual decision-making, positional as well; we have to be in the right positions to put the ball in the back of the net. I don’t believe it’s a huge problem, but it’s going to make a big difference to our play.

“We are scoring goals, but I believe we should be scoring more, the team believe we should be scoring more for the amount of play we have. If we can do that, things really start to take off for us.

“We are moving in the right direction. We could quite easily be fourth or fifth in the table with a couple of results, but we are tenth, so we know there’s work to be done both on and off the pitch. We are trying really hard to do that.”

This weekend’s opponents West Ham United have also arguably deserved more points than they’ve achieved so far. Taylor said that Liverpool need to be switched on to The Hammers’ goal threats.

He said “West Ham are very quick on the break and they’ve got players at the top end of the pitch that can punish you.

“The game is not really based on stats, the most important statistic is the scoreline, but in their most recent game against Brighton, they lost 3-0 and had 13 shots to Brighton’s eight. I think that has been a trend with West Ham; you look at their games and even in the ones that they have lost, they’ve been a threat on the attack. That’s something that you saw against London City in their only defeat of the season where they hurt them on the break.

“With the likes of Asseyi, Gago, Salmon and Ueki coming back into the team, they’re got a threat at the top end of the pitch.

“They’ve been playing under the same manager for a good year or so and we are starting to see a little bit more of an idea of what they are trying to do.”

Liverpool’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at West Ham United kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.
