Mathis Albert impressed in Borussia Dortmund’s first German Cup win of the season and could get the nod once again this week in the second round.
Albert and his Dortmund teammates will welcome Werder Bremen to Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday, seeking a spot in the DFB Pokal third round. The 17-year-old attacker has made two senior appearances, including delivering an impressive 90-minute showing against HEBC Hamburg back in early-September.
Mauricio Pochettino rewarded Albert with his USMNT debut during the September-October window and the young forward made four appearances over the quartet of matches in the process. Albert scored one goal and also drew one penalty kick, showing glimpses of his long-term potential for club and country.
With Dortmund in the midst of a busy October schedule, Niko Kovac could call on Albert in a cup tie that the Black and Yellow will be favored to advance in.
Elsewhere, Alyssa Thompson and Lily Yohannes are among the USWNT contingent to resume UWCL play. Tyler Adams and Bournemouth seek advancement in the EFL Cup while Antonee Robinson and Chris Richards go head-to-head in their tie. Weston McKennie and Juventus take on Genoa in Serie A play while Gianluca Busio and Venezia host Inter Milan. Scottish Premiership play continues for Cameron Carter-Vickers and Celtic at home against Dundee United.
