Five months since his last Club America goal, Alex Zendejas enjoyed that feeling once again.
Zendejas scored once and added one assist on Wednesday in a 5-2 road Liga MX victory over Atlas. It marked the 28-year-old’s first goal contributions since May 10 as Club America stayed top of the Apertura table.
Club America struck twice in the opening 30 minutes, with Miguel Borja and Erick Sanchez both finding the back of the net for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Zendejas played distributor for the visitors’ third goal of the game, teeing up Brian Rodriguez just before the hour mark for a 3-0 advantage.
Five minutes after helping Club America extend its lead, Zendejas dialed his own number, scoring his first goal of the new campaign. Zendejas pounced on a loose ball before rifling a shot into the roof of the net.
Late consolations from Luis Esteves and Ryan Mmaee trimmed Atlas’ deficit to 4-2 with 12 minutes to play but Kevin Alvarez added an insurance goal for Club America off the ensuing kickoff.
Zendejas played 68 minutes in the match, finishing with three chances created, five duels won, and two fouls drawn. It marked his best outing of the campaign as Club America continued its chase for another league title.
Up next for Zendejas and his Club America teammates is a home date with Pachuca on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Sergino Dest and PSV picked up three points in Champions League play over FC Porto. Bryan Reynolds assisted once in Stade Rennais’ Europa League draw with Weston McKennie and Juventus.
