Norgbey warns politicians against interfering in World Cup visa probe

Chairman of Parliaments Youth and Sports Committee, Ernest Norgbey, has called on politicians to allow the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to independently investigate allegations surrounding Ghanas World Cup visa arrangements.Norgbeys comments come amid growing political pressure over the alleged payment of about US$623,000 in visa facilitation fees linked to travel arrangements for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.The Minority in Parliament has called for the dismissal and prosecution of Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams and the Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority over their alleged involvement in the controversy. However, Norgbey believes political involvement could undermine the investigation and make it difficult for the security agencies to establish the facts. We can do our politics; we are politicians, we can do our politics. Im not sure the security agencies, the investigative agencies, will also do politics with it, he said on Joy FMs Top Story. He urged politicians to allow the CID to handle allegations against individuals who may have been involved in the visa arrangements. If an individual has committed a crime, visa recipient, etc., and the investigative authorities are handling the matter, politicians should be taken away out of this matter, he added.Norgbey also cautioned against treating the allegations as established facts before investigations are completed, stressing that public commentary could interfere with the CIDs work.President John Mahama has already directed NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah to step aside amid the investigation. Norgbey noted that the circumstances differ from those involving Kofi Adams, who, to his knowledge, has not been invited by the CID for questioning.
