The United States women’s national team battled Spain to a 2-2 draw in Chester, Pennsylvania on Tuesday night. It was a much-needed result for the U.S. following a tough 2-0 loss to the Spaniards over the weekend.

What can we take away from this draw against the world No. 1? Let’s break it down.

1. Head coach Emma Hayes’ lineup is not set in stone

After this match, it’s abundantly clear that Hayes is still experimenting with starting XIs and substitutions. From the first to the second match, Hayes made four changes to her starting line, switching up every position group. Phallon Tullis-Joyce earned the start in goal, Ashley Sanchez slotted into the front line, and Claire Hutton and Gisele Thompson tagged into the midfield and back line, respectively. Hayes also made eight substitutions in the second half of this match.

Some of these decisions may be the result of player availability, since there are at least six players out for the U.S. due to injury.
