Eva Olid Demands More From Man Utd After Everton Draw

Eva Olid has told her Manchester United players that a point at Goodison Park is not the standard she expects, even with the club’s unbeaten run still intact after Saturday’s goalless Women’s Super League draw with Everton.

The head coach, who replaced Marc Skinner in August, did not hide her frustration after a match in which United created very little until the final quarter of an hour. Speaking after the game, as reported by the Guardian, Olid said: “It was not a good performance, but we aren’t always going to perform amazing or good. But it’s [about] always finding a way to win and today we didn’t.”

Late to the duels, short of ideas

Olid was specific about where her side fell down. “We need to be better,” she said. “Out of possession, we were late, jumping late, to the individual duels, and in-possession we missed that creativity or connections we were having in the last matches.”

The club’s own website framed her post-match message in similar terms, with manutd.com reporting that Olid felt the team dropped below the level it had reached in recent weeks. The best United chance arrived late on, when Elisabeth Terland ran onto a pass from Jess Park and was stopped by Everton goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan.

The derby hangover question

The draw came six days after United’s late equaliser against Manchester City, and Olid admitted she had been wary of a dip after such an emotional afternoon. “After such a positive performance on Sunday [against City] there is always that question, [are we] going to keep that standard or are we going to go a little down, like a hangover after that good match?” she said. “I expected we would be better than we were. If this has to happen for us to learn and improve, we are going to do that.”

Her demands come against a backdrop of steady progress. Sky Sports noted that the result stretched United’s unbeaten sequence to 10 games across all competitions, while the club counts six league matches without defeat. Before Saturday they had won three and drawn one of their previous four WSL fixtures, and they have yet to drop points in the Players Cup.

Where the point leaves both clubs

Everton have still never beaten United in 15 WSL meetings, but Scott Phelan’s side will take encouragement from a disciplined display. The point was their first league draw of the campaign and lifted them to sixth, two points behind United, a week after they fought back late before losing 3-2 at Aston Villa.

Phelan pointed to his team’s organisation without the ball. “Second half, not so much, but it did highlight the togetherness of the team and the defensive organisation,” he told reporters, after admitting his players lacked some belief in the final third before the break.

For Olid, the task now is to make sure a flat afternoon on Merseyside stays a one-off. The meeting was played in front of a home crowd that also enjoyed a Halloween dance routine at half time, a reminder of how clubs are working to build the matchday experience as WSL attendance growth levels off.
